04. A Message from Michael Jackson
Friday, September 30th, marked the end of the first week of the Conrad Murray trial for the death of Michael Jackson. It was an emotionally devastating week. I felt sad, angry, disgusted, and horrified as I heard and saw things that broke my heart. I can't even imagine how Mrs. Jackson and the rest of the family must have felt sitting in that courtroom every day. While I listened to the testimony of the witnesses, I found myself asking God the same question I have many times before: Why did he have to go?
Even though I want to put some of the events of last week out of my mind, there is one I want to remember. Kenny Ortega testified that the last song Michael ever sang was “Earth Song.” That is my favorite song. There is something about that song that touches my heart deeply; it's a combination of the message, the music and Michael's voice. To know it was the last song he ever sang, brought a tear to my eye.
As Friday evening approached, I just wanted to get into some comfortable clothes and watch MJ. Live in Bucharest! I needed to feel the love, desperately – but it was not to be. When my husband got home from work, he reminded me that we had to attend the wake of a distant relative of his who had passed away; a “celebration of his life,” he said.
I was emotionally drained, so going to a wake was the last thing I wanted to do. I didn't even know the man, so I questioned why I even had to attend in the first place, but something told me I needed to go. As I made my way up to the room, yawning all the way, I began to hear a familiar voice. What about sunrise. What about rain. What about all the things that you said we were to gain. They were playing “Earth Song!” I perked right up and a huge smile came over my face. When I walked into the room, the first thing I saw was a sign hanging on the wall with these words written on it:
Those we love don’t go away
They walk beside us every day
Goosebumps came over me. I don't believe in coincidences. Seeing those particular words, while "Earth Song" was playing in the background, after a week of asking: Why did he have to go?
That was the reason I needed to go to the wake. To get a message from Michael Jackson. Now, I pass it along to you.
Remember those words over the next few weeks of the trial and let them give you strength, as we stand together....
